The Linguistics Department was represented at the UNC Science Expo this past Saturday, April 12, 2014. Our booth offered a variety of activities including an introduction and practice with Mayan glyphs and Inka Khipus. One of the students in my Mesoamerican Writing Systems class (Ling 558), Emily Flemming, is seen in some of this images explaining how Mayan writing works and helping visitors figure out how to write their names in glyphs. Also, we can see renown linguist James Matisoff, who offered a guest lecture at our Friday Colloquium the day before, writing his name in glyphs.
